Circus Memorabilia Collectors?

For those of you who are collectors of vintage circus materials, we have a wonderful old item for you.

Just listed on eBay is a near mint condition copy of Harry P. Bowman’s 1942 booklet entitled “As Told On A Sunday Run”.

On A Sunday Run

The booklet is a compilation of circus shows Bowman was associated with over the years and with a list, with dates, of famous first-time circus events and mishaps. Also an alphabetical listing of circuses and tent shows held during the 19th and 20th centuries. An uncommon, war-time circus book.

The booklet is copyrighted 1942 and reads The nation is fighting and there is little time out, but relaxation must sometimes relieve grim, determined endeavor.”

This 31 page booklet is in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. It is more than 60 years old. There are no missing pages and the staples in the center are solid with only the very slightest of rust marks.

Here’s an excerpt from the front page:

“This book is a great story – but not in prose. It is a story of the Sawdust Trail, the Ring, the Aerial Artists, the Calliope and Pink Lemonade. But it is a story written entirely between the lines.

To all true followers of the Big Top, “As Told On A Sunday Run” will furnish the names and dates that will arouse memories old and new, conjuring up in the mind’s eye glorious days that were – and are – the history of The Circus.”

Another US Naval Ship Commissioning Ceremony Program

Following on to the successful sale of the USS Constellation Commissioning Program, we have just listed another similar item.

This auction is for the program from the 1971 Commissioning of the USS Paul (DE-1080). The program is 24 page and was given to guests at the commissioning ceremony held at the Boston Naval Shipyard in Boston, Massachusetts.

USS Paul Program

The program starts with dedication to Lance Corporal Joe Calvin Paul (USMC) and a letter from John H. Chafee, who at the time was the Secretary of the Navy. There is also a letter from Admiral E.R. Zumwalt, JR who was the Chief of Naval Operations and from Vice Admiral George M. Davis who was the Surgeon General of the Navy and the Principal Speaker. The Commanding Officer of the Paul was Commander Donald T. Cannell and his Executive Officer was Lieutenant Commander Joseph J. D’Amato. The ship entered service as a part of the Cruiser-Destroyer force of the United States Atlantic Fleet.

The pamphlet gives the complete program of the day which started out with an Invocation by the Chaplain, a number of speeches by various dignitaries including Rear Admiral Joseph C. Wylie, the Commandant of the First Naval District and ends with the remarks of the new Commanding Officer and Benediction.

This is a wonderful, unique and rare pamphlet that will be an important addition to any US Navy collection. It’s in excellent condition with little or no effects of aging. No writing, pencil or pen marks noted anywhere and no rips or tears.

As with the last one, this program brochure comes from a collection of ephemera by a very notable Washington gentleman and has been kept all these years in excellent condition… waiting for YOU to add to your collection. Don’t miss it!
