Encore-Ephemera joins AVCOSA

Palm Beach Gardens, FL – January 28, 2009 -
Encore-Ephemera (www.encore-ephemera.com), a leading source for vintage advertising and transitory written and printed matter announced today that it has joined the Antiques, Vintage & Collectibles Online Sellers Association (AVCOSA). We look forward to sharing ideas, information and resources relative to the Ephemera marketplace with other Association members.

Encore-Ephemera believes there is a strong need for a Trade Association specifically designed around online selling. AVCOSA is well positioned to represent the interests of those sellers and to promote professionalism in the online marketplace in general through education, information and technology.

At Encore-Ephemera we have collected literally thousands of pieces of printed ephemera and will be offering them both in our own online store and through our bonanzle.com booth. We are dedicated to providing our collection in a manner that protects, preserves, educates, and supports those who seek these pieces of paper ephemera.

War Rationing Ephemera

Again, in my constant search for items of interest, … related to Ephemera of course … I am always scouring the internet.

Gas Ration BookToday I ran across a website that has lots of photos of the books that were used during the Second World War (WWII) to ration everything from sugar to meat to rice and even gasoline and nylon stockings.  Regardless of your finances, you were only allowed to buy small amounts and on a specific time line.  Rationing was the only way to be sure everyone got their fair share.  In addition to the ration books the government also issued ration coins (or tokens) that allowed retailers to give change back for food bought with ration stamps.

Thanks to the Ames Historical Society in Ames, Iowa, and a Share My Carcollection they have named “Ames Iowa Remembers World War II”, we are able to look at a large number of not only Ration Books and Ration Coins but also stickers, magazine articles, stamps, registration forms, War Bonds and War Savings Stamps.

Also on the site is a list of all rationed items (with dates of the duration) as well as sections from a 1943 Sears Roebuck catalog containing a list of all rationed farm equipment and an article that tells the reasons and benefits of rationing.

I have by no means finished perusing the site… but I sure plan to in the next few days.  If any of this interests you, I’d suggest stopping by at the Ames Historical Society Exhibit.. for a visit.  The true Ephemerist will, I’m quite sure, find it a very interesting site.

I’m Tom Murphy and thanks for helping me give Ephemera the encore it deserves.

Live Auctions on Bonanzle !

Yesterday afternoon, for those of you who may have missed it, Wally Kolenda, better known as “Auction Wally” ran what I believe was the very first LIVE Auction on Bonanzle!

Auction WallyWally, for those of you who don’t know him, is a licensed Massachsetts auctioneer who’s been building a brand online for quite a while now. If you Google AuctionWally, you’ll see what I mean… or you can visit his homepage here.

The Bonanzle Auction started at 1:00 PM Eastern time and was preceded by an hour’s preview session where Wally audibly went through and described each lot, and answered any questions that those in the auction house may have had.

You ask – “what auction house” – and “how was it live, how did he describe the items, how did one hear the previews”. Admittedly it took a bit of hacking together and some skills to really “go to” the auction. But none of it was above the skills of anyone here. If you are able to list an item in your Bonanzle booth, have a speaker on your computer, and just a few minutes patience… you can do it. I did and really enjoyed both setting it up… and of course, participating in the LIVE Auction

It seems to me that it works best if you have two browser windows open on your computer. I had one open looking at Wally’s booth on Bonanzle (http://www.bonanzle.com/booths/auctionwally). In the second window I had Wally’s TalkShoe feed and this is where you could hear Wally’s auctioneer’s chant. (The rhythmic chant used by most auctioneers is aimed at holding the attention of the audience and keeping the auction moving at a steady pace. The chant is a series of numbers (dollar amounts) connected by “filler” words to give the buyer time to think between bids). You can even go to TalkShoe now and download a recording of yesterday’s full event. So essentially you listened to Wally on TalkShoe… and you placed your bids in the Bonanzle chat window in Wally’s booth. – Simple!

Despite a few minor technical difficulties at the start, all went extremely well. The overall session, including the one hour preview went for some three and one-half hours. During that time there were as many as 50 “buyers” in Wally’s both at one point and he sold some 14-15 lots – even a few items of Ephemera – at prices that honestly in some cases amazed me!

Even I entered the excitement and placed a bit on several items…. one of which I won for a very fair $19. Just like a real live auction, you had to be quick, you had to listen carefully, and you had to pick your moment to bid… all of which added to the fun of the LIVE Auction.

From what I have heard since the LIVE Auction ended, Mark Dorsey of Bonanzle even stopped in on the LIVE Auction at one point.. and is now back at work with his team in Bonanzle HQ finding a way to more seamlessly integrate the audio, the bidding, and the selling into the Bonanzle platform. Let’s hope he is successful… and speedy.

If you missed the excitement.. and it WAS exciting… Wally has scheduled another LIVE Auction for Saturday February 7th at the same time – 1:00 PM Eastern. Based on the response yesterday, I’d expect another very successful event. So take some time over the next few days to get familiar with TalkShoe, the chat room in Wally’s booth, and the preview of items that he will be putting up on the next auction block.

I’ll be there.. I hope to see you there as well!

Ephemera Groups on Flickr

In my constant search to find, read about, learn about and see interesting Ephemera, I have apparently missed Flickr Groups.

Today I was again wandering the net and ran across the Flickr “Old Railway Posters” group.  It’s a public group and currently has some 462 posters in the Group Pool.  The group has 31 members and you need to be a member to post new items.. but not to peruse.

I’ve included just one here.. but you can see a whole lot more by going to Flickr.

There are often comments or descriptions with the posters.. such as this one that refers to this Exotic Thailand poster:

“It’s an interesting image of the Giant Swing — a Bangkok landmark that is no longer on the tourist circuit. It used to be the centerpiece of a Hindu ceremony that annually saw teams of men ride a boat-like swing in higher and higher arcs until one of the swingers could catch a small bag of gold that was suspended from an adjacent bamboo pole. If I remember the story right, the guy had to catch it with his teeth.”

As time allows I intend to wander some more around Flickr… and report back to you some of the other Ephemera gems that I uncover.

How about YOU?  Have you uncovered any interesting Ephemera collections that we can feature?

I’m Tom Murphy and thanks for helping me give Ephemera the encore it deserves.

Off Topic – WordPress Quickstart

This blog is a bit off topic…. but I wanted to share with my fellow bloggers who use WordPress about a great resource I have recently uncovered – in the unlikely place of my local library.

Wordpress2WordPress 2 (Visual QuickStart Guide)was written by Maria Langer and Miraz Jordan and published by Peachpit Press.

The book is certainly a lot more than a “quick start” though.   I read through it over the weeked and found lots and lots of things I did not know about WordPress… and here I thought I was – well not an expert… but…

Over the next several weeks the careful observer may see a few changes in this blog and the others that I author.  Most will be subtle changes so they may not be immediately obvious to the casual reader… and that’s a good thing.  In your face drastic changes are not something I like to make.

Brian GardnerWhile I am off topic, let me also comment on WordPress themes.  I have become a real fan of Brian Gardner.  He is a WP theme designer who I really admire. I purchased a theme package from him some time ago and could not be happier.  I have used them in several different blogs and all are great.

Studio PressBrian has recently opened StudioPress where he offers professional services for web design, content management and blogging. Take a look at his projects and services, I think you will be happy with what you see.

Let me know if you have any WordPress tips or shortcuts that I might use… and/or share with my readers.

Gubernatorial Campaign Ephemera

The library at the University of North Carolina maintains a blog entitled “North Carolina Miscellany” with a subtitle of “Exploring the History, Literature and Culture of the Tar Heel State”.  I mentioned it in an earlier blog article.

Today I want to talk about two blog articles on their site – entitled as above.  Seems North Carolina has taken on a new Governor and the author of the blog decided to share a few of his/her favorite pieces of gubernatorial campaign ephemera.

The first article was about the Republican candidate Bev Perdue and a poster her committee created.  The author points out what a bad Photoshop job he feels was done on it – and – also how the poster does gets the group’s point about illegal immigrants across. [Read more...]

Pearl’s Sentimental Journey

In my last blog I introduced you to T’s Old Things.  As I slowly get back into the swing of things (after a great Holiday season) let me introduce you to Pearl.

Pearl's Sentimental JourneyI ran into Pearl from a comment she made on one of my blog posts.  She describes herself as “an ancient soul that finds unique pleasures in this life… family & friends are my best treasures. As the silent songs of shabby pieces of the past sing out to me… I find myself magically drawn into their enchanting existance…

Clicking over to her blog on January 4th you will find a collection of  Vintage Trade Cards from the 1880’s… about “… a positive cure for all those painful complaints and weaknesses so common to our best female population.”

It’s an interesting collection… and I look forward to seein more from her.  One can only guess that she has quite an assortment of Ephemera that she will eventually display on her blog. Like for example this collection of Vintage Halloween Cards.

Wander through her site.  I’m sure you will find something of interest.

Welcome to 2009 !

The holidays and some travel have kept me away from the blog… but I am now back and ready to start the new year off – slowly.

Let’s begin with just a link to a fun site… T’s Old Things is run by a fellow who says he’s “Retired, and loves reading, hunting and fishing, and also looking at and buying old printed ephemera”.

Perhaps what caught my eye about his blog is this statement:

I will try to upload each day at least two Vintage printed ephemera (1890 to 1940) images from my own large collection of vintage printed ephemera. They will be ones that I sort of like but if anyone would like to see a certain subject, I will check and see if I have anything.

Dionne QuintsAnd so far, he seems to be meeting his objectives.  Here’s one that caught my eye for example.  It’s a magazine ad showing the 5 Dionne quintuplets.  They were born in 1934 and were the first known set of quints to survive infancy and are still the only known female identical set on record.

According to Wikipedia – “The sisters, and their likenesses and images, along with a Dr. Dafoe, were used to publicize commercial products such as corn syrup and Quaker Oats among thousands of other popular brands”.

This ad certainly seems to fit that description.

Anyway, have a look at T’s blog.  I am sure you too will find an interesting old piece of Ephemera on his page.  And if you don’t – come back the next day and see if he is living up to his objectives.
