A recent article from CNN in London reveals that “an American professor doing research in London stumbled across a series of previously unknown letters written by, to, and about Benjamin Franklin”. The find is reported in William and Mary Quarterly, a journal of early American history and culture.
While the letters are hand-written copies, they are believed to have been made by a Mr. Thomas Birch, a transcriber of historical documents who was a friend of Franklin’s. Both were members of the Royal Society.
The letters are part of a massive Birch Collection filed in the British Library and cataloged in the early 1970s.
