The reference box

I’ve found another site, this time in the UK, that I think may be of interest to our Ephemera fans.

Delicious Industries is an independent design studio based in Brighton, UK. Their main site is deliciousindustries.com but if you’d like to see a lot of their interesting ephemera you need to go to their reference box.

Grocery BagThis is the item that first caught my eye on their reference set page. Their description of the item reads:

War-time grocery bag The grocery bag would have been used in local shops to hold small individual items. It’s in really good condition and I love the text: “In War Time as in Time of Peace, We aim to give Quality, Service, Satisfaction. The private trader considers you all the time.”

As they say, it’s funny how even back then value and importance of independent shops was being promoted.

Highway Safety Code BookAnother item that caught my eye was this page from a British Highway Code Book. It’s a 1954 edition and the diagrams are great. You need to look at all the pages which are on the site. It’s an 8 or 9 page pamphlet and is in very good condition for its age. I particularly like the “Bobbie” hat on the officer directing traffic.

There are some 47 pieces of Ephemera in the reference box and all are quite interesting. You should definitely pay the site a visit.

I’m Tom Murphy and thanks for helping me give Ephemera the encore it deserves.

Have you met Pilllpat?

EurekaI haven’t either… but I certainly enjoy looking at her Ephemera collection on Flickr.

Since she appears to be in France.. and I speak very little French, Patricia (that seems to be her name) eludes me on exactly what her collection consists of or its origin. It would appear that perhaps she is part of, or an owner of, an advertising agency called Eureka (agence eureka) but I’m not sure of that.

EphemeraWhat I am sure of is that she has hundreds and hundreds of items of Ephemera on Flickr. If you look at her upload rate (available on Flickr) you’ll see that she added 2100 images in the month of February 2009 alone! That alone is amazing to me!.

JloieDue to limited space, and of course respecting her copyrights, I have only shown a few of her items here.. but I urge you to go over to Flickr and have a look at her extensive collection.

The starting point appears to be here .. http://www.flickr.com/photos/taffeta/ and from there you can look at her collections, sets, etc.

Have you found any other extensive Ephemera sets on Flickr? Perhaps you’d like to share them with us? Send me what you’ve found and I’ll look to putting it into an upcoming blog article. And by the way, if you are fluent in French, I’d love to learn more about Pilllpat’s collection!

Unique Military Ephemera

There is an interesting article over at Collectors Quest today entitled Unique Militaria: WWI Sheet Music.

Songs from times of warThe article talks about sheet music for songs from times of war. The one depicted here is called “I’d Be Proud to be the Mother of a Soldier.” It shows a white haired lady with a lacy collar and black dress. She’s holding onto the hand of a soldier in WWI uniform. The words to the song lament that their son has to go off ‘to fight’ and they ‘pray for peace.’

Sheet music is perhaps not as popular today as it was back at the start of the last century but it still exists. Vintage sheet music can certainly be categorized as Ephemera and for many is highly collectible.

The article points out that sheet music is generally easy to find and almost always inexpensive at estate sales. The ones referring to military history are often a bit higher, but a batch can often be had for under $10.

I urge you to read the entire article…. and keep your eyes open when you next attend an estate sale.

The Allentown Wings

Here’s a quick Sunday morning blog article as noted in “Molovinsky on Allentown“…

In early August of 1942, Alvin Butz attempted to prevail on the Detroit Tigers minor league team not to cancel their scheduled game with The Allentown Wings, minor league team of the St. Louis Cardinals. The game was supposed to be played on August 26th on Fairview Field, currently known as Bicentennial Park. Mr. Butz was president of the ballclub at that time and was also a major contributor of the current stadium built in 1975.

Allentown Wings

If you are a baseball fan.. or an old time Allentown, PA resident as presumably Mr. Molovinsky is, this would be a great piece of Ephemera to own.

Preserving Vintage Ephemera…..

Sandy Babb, over at the Quill Cottage has an interesting and informative blog today about how to best preserve your ephemera.

She starts out with this important comment:

Almost everyone has paper documents; old school drawings, income tax returns, old deeds, yellowed newspaper clippings, etc. they want to keep as mementos. The key to preserving these family treasures is proper handling and storage.

Preserving Vintage EphemeraSandy then she goes on to discuss the main culprit that causes paper to deteriorate and yellow.. and that is acid. She talks about some commercially available products that are available as a spray to neutralize the acid and slow down the aging process as well as improve storage methods. She says that while this is not a permanent solution, it can help extend the life of a document.

Sandy then goes on to describe in great detail a number of handling and storage tips to help preserve your vintage documents and photos.

If you are a collector of Ephemera or even if you just have a few important vintage family document of photographs around the house, you should give this informative article a read. I am sure you will pick up a tip or two… or at least find it a worthwhile read.

Circopedia

If you have not yet visited Circopedia you are missing a fantastic site… especially if you have an interest in both the Circus and Ephemera.

Cirque d’Hiver

Located in the heart of Paris, between the Place de la République and the Place de la Bastille, at the edge of the historical Marais, the Cirque d’Hiver is the world’s oldest extant circus building. It is also the world’s oldest circus still in activity: It first opened its doors in 1852. Its address, at 110 rue Amelot, may seem inconspicuous, but at that precise point, the rue Amelot opens onto the Boulevard du Temple through the small Place Pasdeloup: The Cirque d’Hiver is therefore quite noticeable, practically “on the Boulevards.”

Circus of Paris

The site is not that heavily devoted to Ephemera actually, but in most all of the references on the site you will find one or more vintage documents, posters, pamphlets, brochures and other pieces of ephemera.

The picture to the left is of Gaston Desprez, Director of the Cirque d’Hiver (Paris) from 1923 to 1934. It comes from the front page of a Cirque d’Hiver program, c.1925.

Circus Knie

If you are more into something modern, the picture below is the 2008 poster from the Circus Knie. Today the Knie Circus is one of Europe’s major circuses, traveling on two special trains with an important menagerie. It is renowned for its perfect organization, and the quality of its shows—which have become the standard against which other traditional circus shows are measured. Knie CircusUnder the management of Frédy and Franco Knie, Circus Knie has maintained its unique position in Europe; it has also been at the vanguard of animal care, at a time when some circuses still had a hard time adapting to the audience’s change of sensitivity regarding the way animals were kept in traveling circuses.

The Ephemera Assemblyman

I’ve mentioned the Ephemera Assemblyman before.. and I am continuously going back to Joel’s site to see what he has uncovered of late.

I don’t know much about him other than that he is a student in Davis, CA. UC Davis perhaps?

Slovenian Event PosterToday I found a wonderful collection of some 15 “Slovenian Event Posters” on his site. The one to the left particularly caught my eye, perhaps because of the lovely smiles on the faces of the children.

His site tells us that this was from a Soft Drinks Exhibition in Ljubljana back in 1954. At that time of course Slovenia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It gained its independence in 1991 and is now part of the European Union.

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and its largest city. It’s located in the center of the country and is a mid-sized city of some 270,000 inhabitants. It’s the cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative center of Slovenia.

It’s worth noting that this is NOT the personal collection of Joel… but rather his uncovering of the massive collection at the fantastic Digital Library of Slovenia.

I’m Tom Murphy and thanks for helping me give Ephemera the encore it deserves.
