1920′s Chinese mnemonic phonetic chart of Mandarin pronunciation

Today’s item of the day is a which is up for bid on eBay. It has a starting price of just $9.99

The seller tells us this: This auction is for an original 1920s poster showing Mnemonic Chart for pronouncing and spelling Chinese. This item measures about 31″ x 43″ and is the vintage original from 1920s. It is not a copy, not a print, not a recent creation. The item was once folded, so there is wear along the edges where it was folded. There are tears throughout some folds and edges — see larger scans below. There is also a small hole on the right center — see detailed closeups below.

This is a valuable historical item, as this was probably a poster or instructional tool made for either schools or government agencies back in the 1920s. The paper is very thin, so it should be linen-backed or matted. Given the fragile paper typical of the 1920s, many of these haven either been discarded or otherwise damaged. SCARCE — RARE FIND IN ANY CONDITION.

1878 HANDWRITTEN DIARY – Axe Murderers Cousin!

Today’s item of the day is a which is up for bid on eBay. It has a starting price of just $9.99

The seller tells us this: An interesting diary with an amazing history ….This wonderful 133 YEAR OLD handwritten antique diary / journal / manuscript book – was written just thirteen years after the American Civil War by a man by the name of NELSON GORDON and he lived in THORNDIKE, Waldo County, MAINE which is in the Belfast / Unity area of the State. Nelson Gordon was a cousin to the axe murderer, John True Gordon, also of Thorndike, Maine, who killed his brother Almon, and Almon wife and little daughter in 1873, shocking the little community of Thorndike, and no doubt shocking Nelson Gordon too! This horrific murder occured five years prior to when this diary was written!

1894 Benjamin Franklin Almanac

1894 Benjamin Franklin Almanac

Today’s item of the day is a which is up for bid on eBay. It has BIN price of just $129.00

The seller tells us this: One of 144 copies of the first and more elaborate of the two books (plus one pamphlet) produced by the book collecting club The Duodecimos in the late 19th Century. The Duodecimos was an exclusive club numbering 12 members, among them printer Francis Wilson, collector Paul Lemperly, publishers W. Irving Way and Herbert Stone and author Eugene Field. For this facsimile of the only surviving copy of Franklin’s first almanac, no expense was spared. The Club members acquired various journals, diaries and other 18th Century blank paper, so the facsimile portion would be printed on actual paper of the time. The printing of the facsimile was done at the De Vinne Press, using an old oak hand press and other 18th Century printing techniques. (12 copies, one for each member, were printed on vellum). For the introductory pages they had special hand-made paper bearing the Club’s watermark manufactured, and had cast a new reproduction of an 18th Century font. The book is illustrated with 14 portraits of Franklin, mostly collotypes mounted on hinges bound in to the book, but with the frontispiece being an original pencil signed etching by Thomas Johnson from a pastel then owned by John Bigelow of New York, who wrote the introduction to this volume.
