The greatest percentage of the vintage advertising we and others sell on eBay are of course from American magazine.  But due to our international business travel we are often able to include some very lovely items from well known overseas publications.

Our most recent upload to eBay included a number of ads from the German edition of Elle magazine as well as several ads from a number of different Chinese magazines.

Triumph

What often makes these unique and appealing to our local audience is that they are the same ads that we see here in US magazines, but with an international character set.  Take for example this Triumph lingerie ad that appeared in the 2006 edition of Elle magazine in Germany.  A the same ad appeared in the US version but with English wording.  So a collector whose Ephemera collection focused on either the Triumph brand or lingerie in general might want to have several versions of the same magazine ad.. but in different language sets.

Bobbi

Here’s another one for Bobbi Brown cosmetics that appeared in a Chinese edition of Cosmo in Hong Kong.  Most of the text in the ad is in Chinese characters.  Again, a very similar ad appeared in the US around the same time.  I’m sure if you are able to read Chinese you will notice that much if not all of the copy reads the same as the US version… after all, they are selling the same product, just to a different market made up of a different audience.

Sharon Stone

Sometimes of course the picture says it all.

What caught the eye of the readers as they flipped through this Chinese magazine was not necessarily the name Dior, but rather the wonderful picture of Sharon Stone.   The product is Dior’s Capture Totale but the ad agency was hoping that the international stardom of Sharon Stone would be what caused the Chinese audience to stop ad read.. and of course hopefully buy their product.

McDonalds

Just to show that I am not totally focused on just beautiful women, here’s yet another German ad, for our well known fast food chain McDonalds.  It appeared in a 2006 publication called Brigitte but was of course all in German.  The German text reads something along the lines of “I like the clear answers that I get at McDonalds”.

As I continue to post these international advertisements, I am trying to link them all so that one can search either on “Chinese” or “German” or whatever other publication languages we have, and get a complete list of all the ads available in those languages. Ori Hofmekler is a well-known political artist – as well as a health expert. The founder, editor, and publisher of the national health and fitness magazine Mind and Muscle Power, also created a number of political sketches that appeared in the mid to late 80′s in publications such as Penthouse.

He published a paperback book available at Amazon entitled Hofmekler’s Gallery on the cover of which was a cartoon caricature of Lee Iococca.  Some of his other famous ones are Bill Clinton and Pat Robertson who ran for President of the United States.

We currently have three of Hofmekler’s pages available in our shop… one of which is shown here.  The other two are of Clinton and Robertson.

Wow, I can’t believe how long it’s been since my last post!

Suffice it to say that I have been uber-busy of late, between vacation travel, birthdays (yep, I’m a year older) and just general projects around the house and neighborhood.. I’ve just not had (or found) the time to update my blog.

But I have been reading others blogs and scouring the internet at times… and continue to find interesting posts with regard to our favorite topic… Ephemera.

Alana, who runs “Alana’s Vintage Collecting Blog” had a recent article with the above topic (I borrowed the picture from her as well). A vintage ad enthusiast like myself, (she also runs Alana’s Vintage Media), she takes us through some history of Coke and its advertising department.

“Coca-Cola advertisements have always been unique and interesting. They have continuously followed current events and happenings across America and are, therefore, a rich source of cultural information.”

I’ll not go much further than to say she has a well organized article that covers such topics as

It’s unusual for us to talk about non-ephemera items here.. but we’ll tie it back later in the article.

I recently listed, on eBay, a very old Dinky car known as the “Studebaker State Commander”.  This particular item (Dinky number 24O) is somewhat unique as it was built by Meccano France… as opposed to the original British toy company that was established in 1908 by a gentleman named Frank Hornby.  During the 1920s and 1930s it became the biggest toy manufacturer in Britain and produced three of the most popular lines of toys in the twentieth century: Meccano, Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys.

In 1912 Hornby set up an office in Paris to import Meccano into France and by 1921 the French market had proved so successful that production began at the newly opened factory in Paris with another plant opening in 1929 where production of the Dinky Toys would be based.

During the Second World War the Meccano factories were commandered by the invading Germans and used in the Nazi war effort, as well as production of model vehicles in the German Marklin range. Then, in the early post-war years the model vehicles were forced to be shod with metal wheels due to Nazi activity during the war which had virtually cut off supplies of rubber to France.  Rubber tyres were not fitted again on models until 1950.

By the 1950s the French Dinky Toys began concentrating on the products of the French motor manufacturers; Citroen, Renault, Peugeot and Simca, along with examples of American cars which were popular at that time on mainland Europe.  Some models such as the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia were produced both in France and in Great Britain.  By the 1960s the vast majority of the French Dinky range were only available in the home market although a few models did make it across the English Channel to be sold in Britain. The French factory closed in 1970 and a Spanish company produced some Dinky models which were originally sold as French Dinky Toys until the end of the decade.

So the Dinky I listed was made in France during the period of 1949-50 and has the metal wheels mentioned above.  It has a typical Dinky cast body with a black sheet metal base.  While the car has obvious signs of wear, it is still in the original cream color, i.e. not restored.  Values on Dinky Toys vary, as do all collectible items, but we would expect this auction item to end at several hundred dollars due to its age and condition.

If you are more interested in the Studebaker line of cars.. than the Dinky toys, you may want to look at this link which takes you to a wonderful site all about the memorable Studebakers.  There are hundreds of pictures, and even some EPHEMERA ads for the cars during the war period.  You will soon find that Studebaker was involved in more than just manufacturing automobiles.

So there you have it.  A brief into to the Meccano company, some information on the Dinky Studebaker State Commander.. and even some information about Studebakers in general.

Once again my eye was taken by the posting on “The Ephemera Assemblyman’s” blog.

Joel this week bring us a huge collection of magazine covers from Cornell University. Quoting his blog:

The Cornell Widow was a humorous student-run magazine at Cornell University. It was first published on October 4, 1894 and continued until financial problems shut it down in 1962. The magazine’s name comes from the term “college widow” who was “the girl who bowled over class after class of freshmen without really landing one.”

He has some 23 covers shown on his blog and another 4-5 inside pages.

There was a lot for me to choose from to show on this blog… but the one shown on the right perhaps caught my eye the most. How many of our readers remember the Nicaraguan Revolution?

Here’s a hint from Wikipedia.org” “The Nicaraguan Revolution (Revolución Nicaragüense or Revolución Popular Sandinista, also RPS) embodies a major historical part, not only to Nicaragua, Central America and the American continent, it also marked one of the high notes in the development of the Cold War.”

I haven’t either… but I certainly enjoy looking at her Ephemera collection on Flickr.

Since she appears to be in France.. and I speak very little French, Patricia (that seems to be her name) eludes me on exactly what her collection consists of or its origin. It would appear that perhaps she is part of, or an owner of, an advertising agency called Eureka (agence eureka) but I’m not sure of that.

What I am sure of is that she has hundreds and hundreds of items of Ephemera on Flickr. If you look at her upload rate (available on Flickr) you’ll see that she added 2100 images in the month of February 2009 alone! That alone is amazing to me!.

Due to limited space, and of course respecting her copyrights, I have only shown a few of her items here.. but I urge you to go over to Flickr and have a look at her extensive collection.
